How to Maintain Furniture for Long Life — IVA Furniture Showroom Kannur

Every home and office purchases furniture with the hope that it will last for many years. But for many people, problems start appearing within just a short time of buying. The furniture may have been bought from a good showroom and the quality may be fine — but it is the way it is used and maintained that leads to damage over time. IVA Furniture & Interior Studio Kannur is writing this blog for you to explain how, with the right care and maintenance, your furniture can be used for many more years to come.

Importance of Furniture Maintenance

Before going into the tips and maintenance, it is worth noting that Kerala this year is experiencing higher humidity than most other years, averaging between 70% and 90%. The sudden heavy rains at certain times, followed by intense heat, affect furniture greatly. Cracks forming in chairs and tables, and insects entering through cracks in wood, are some of the most serious problems that arise. To protect your furniture from all of this, proper maintenance is absolutely essential. With over 30 years of experience, we are here to share some useful tips just for you.

Clean Regularly, But Clean the Right Way

The most common mistake people make is wiping furniture with a wet cloth. What many do not realize is that instead of cleaning, they are actually pushing more moisture into the wood. When cleaning any furniture, always use a dry cloth, and if needed, use only a very small amount of water. Never use an overly wet cloth.

For upholstered furniture like sofas and cushioned chairs, vacuuming regularly is a good practice. Using a fabric conditioner is also beneficial but only in very moderate amounts. Most importantly, never use chemical-based cleaners or bleach on any furniture surface, as they damage the finish and the surface permanently.

Keep Furniture Away from Direct Sunlight

Sunlight is beautiful in a Kerala home, but it is quietly destructive for furniture. UV rays cause wood to fade, discolor, and dry out faster. Upholstery fabric fades and weakens. Even metal surfaces can heat up and expand, causing warping in joinery over time.

Position your furniture so that it is not in the direct path of sunlight through windows. Use curtains, blinds, or UV-filtering window films in rooms where sunlight is strong. If you cannot avoid sun exposure, rotate furniture positions occasionally so that fading happens evenly rather than on one side. This is a particularly important point for Kerala homes where large windows and open ventilation are common by design.

Polish and Re-finish Wooden Furniture Periodically

The polish or lacquer finish on wooden furniture is not just for looks — it is a protective barrier against moisture, dust, and minor scratches. Over time, this finish wears down, and when it does, the bare wood underneath becomes vulnerable.

For most wooden furniture in Kerala, re-polishing every two to three years is a good practice. If you notice the surface looking dull, rough, or if water no longer beads on the surface and instead soaks in, it is time to re-polish. You can use a good quality wood polish or furniture wax for regular maintenance between professional re-finishing. Apply with a soft cloth in circular motions, leave for a few minutes, and buff to a shine.

At IVA Furniture & Interior Studio Kannur, we always advise our clients on the right type of finish for each material — melamine, PU, or natural oil finish based on where the furniture is placed and how it is used.

Control Moisture and Ensure Proper Ventilation

This is the single most important maintenance habit for Kerala homes. Moisture is the number one enemy of furniture here. Ensuring good air circulation in every room goes a long way in protecting your furniture.

Leave a gap of at least two to three inches between large furniture pieces like wardrobes and beds and the wall behind them. This allows air to circulate and prevents moisture from getting trapped, which is a common cause of mold, mildew, and wood rot on the back panels of furniture.

In rooms that tend to stay closed for long periods — a spare bedroom or a storage room — open the windows and air the room out at least a few times a week, especially after rain. Consider using a small dehumidifier or moisture-absorbing packets inside closed wardrobes, particularly during peak monsoon months from June to August. Avoid placing furniture directly on wet or freshly mopped floors. Use rubber or felt pads under furniture legs to create a small barrier from ground moisture.

Protect Against Termites and Pests

Termites are a serious and very real threat in Kerala. They work silently and by the time you notice the damage, it is often too late to save the furniture. Prevention is always better than treatment here.

Use termite-resistant materials from the start — teak and marine plywood are naturally more resistant. For other wood types, make sure the furniture has been treated with a good quality anti-termite solution before or during finishing.

For ongoing protection, use neem-based repellents, camphor balls, or cedar blocks inside wardrobes and storage cabinets. These natural repellents keep not just termites but moths and other insects away from fabric and wood. Inspect wooden furniture carefully every six months — look for small holes, sawdust-like powder near joints, or hollow sounds when you tap the surface. If you spot any of these signs, call a pest control professional immediately before the damage spreads.

Care for Specific Furniture Types

Different furniture needs slightly different attention.

For beds, rotate the mattress every three to six months to prevent uneven wear. Check the bed frame joints and slats regularly, especially if the frame is wooden.

For dining tables, always use a tablecloth or table mats. Wipe spills immediately — even waterproof finishes can be damaged by prolonged liquid exposure.

For wardrobes, keep the insides well-ventilated and avoid overstuffing. Overloaded wardrobes put pressure on hinges, shelves, and the overall frame.

For sofas, fluff and rotate cushions regularly. Keep pets from scratching fabric or leather surfaces. Address any loose stitching or minor tears immediately before they grow larger.
